My blog is carbon neutral

April 26th, 2010

New school meets old school in environmental conservation.

As our number one priority is trying to aid the environment, it only seemed right to join the, ‘make it green’  kaufDA initiative.  This is a simple but affective way of helping cut your c02 usage from online activities.  In our case we are going to neutralise our blog‘s c02, by getting a tree planted. The average tree , has an average yearly absorption value of 5kg whereas the average blog produces 3.6Kg of carbon dioxide a year.

Getting involved with this scheme is another small, yet affective way of doing your bit!

efergy at the Gadget Show

April 15th, 2010

So,  last week efergy was exhibiting at the Gadget Show Live.  It was a great experience for all of us, everyone in the office came down at one point or another.  . We were definitely one of the smaller companies to go, and were surrounded by some of the big hitters like, Nintendo and Sanyo. We certainly made a decent attempt to compete with the other technology and stands there. Being our first major show it was more about awareness to the products and company than selling, and both went well!

On the face of it, it seems like a contradiction, an energy saving company going to a show where the latest tech is a big expender of electricity. Our stand stood out and looked fresh against the other creations. We were also well received by the press, and our green credentials stood out.

Earth Hour Saturday 27th

March 26th, 2010

DON’T FORGET Earth Hour is this Saturday 27th March at 8.30.

‘Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Coliseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.’ www.earthhour.org

This is a great idea , and seemingly growing year upon year, as people sit up and take notice of today’s climate issues.

Energy bills on the rise

February 5th, 2010

The current energy climate is seeing the need for household savings. Ofgem, the energy regulator in UK, have announced this week that ‘energy bills will rise by 2020’. This price rise is due to the shortfall in sustainable energy supplies, this in turn means that you are going to have become ever more strict with their household energy usage to avoid getting that nasty energy bill, it’s time to turn plasma TVs and PS3s off standby. Our range of energy saving devices can help you start this saving today!
Ofgem have suggested a few solutions to this ever increasing issue; Most notably getting energy suppliers to make a change in their ways and show how they make a difference. Here at efergy we already deal with one major distributor who are trialling a scheme by giving customers free energy monitors for their homes. Also Ofgem want more investment into ‘green’ technology’ which is great for us as we want to help encourage more energy saving.
See the BBC video with the Ofgem chief executive, Alistair Buchanan:

Coinciding with this piece of not so good news, the government has announced Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which will pay people for the heat they generate themselves. This looks at home owners using other forms of energy , of the more renewable variety to power homes around the country. The UK is aiming to become the first country to reach 12% mark in terms of renewable energy powering homes. Carbon emissions caused by the needing to heat homes currently stands at 47%. Engaging in this scheme maybe worth a look at as it is guaranteeing a £1000 plus per household, and a chance to get some money back of the government. The tariff on this is available at, The Renewable Energy Association. http://www.r-e-a.net/info/rea-news/

Apple raising the ‘green’ stakes in technology?

February 5th, 2010

The new apple i-pad claims to be a ‘revolutionary device’ in a technological sense, but have apple hit upon a revolutionary piece of ‘green’ technology?
This past week has seen the release of Apples latest product, the i pad. It is another typically classy piece, both in looks and features to come from apple. They seem to have a good knack for this now. What I am more interested in is the green or potentially green consequences surrounding it.
Firstly the i pad is a technological advancement in the condensing of all day to day and business activities into one small portable device. This is automatically allowing more saving on paper usage, due to the portability of the device. Also with the integrated e-reader it allows books and newspapers to be read and so cutting back on more paper usage.
It is even better than a laptop especially as it is running on battery power in comparison to a laptop where battery power is still an issue and bulk chargers need to be carried around. This coincides with apples new battery advancements, which they claim to have nearly 3 times the life span of a normal battery, so will get thrown away less. On top of this Apple also offers a take back scheme on batteries so they are disposed of correctly.
Finally in recent months Apple have re designed packaging and build materials to make it far more eco friendly, by eliminating toxic substances. So as an all-round environmental package the i-pad looks the business. View Apples environmental advancements here:

So are apple wanting to go green and become a leader in this field or is it just a shrewd business move?
